If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen, you’re probably enjoying the convenience that it brings, but this doesn’t mean that you should just allow anything at all to go down the sink. There are certain items that a garbage disposal can’t handle very well. If you want to keep your garbage disposal working for a long time, you should avoid these items:
- Eggshells – While eggshells crack easily when you tap them against the edge of the counter, they can actually do quite a bit of damage to the blades in your garbage disposal, so don’t throw them down the drain.
- Hard items – This includes bones, stonefruit pits, and similar items that can damage the blades or get stuck in your garbage disposal.
- Fibrous vegetables – There are many different types of vegetables that have strong, long fibers in them. Celery, broccoli, asparagus, just to mention a few. If you have scraps of these vegetables left behind, you’re better of just throwing them out in your garbage.
