For most homeowners, the idea of a water heater conjures thoughts of a giant tank sitting seemingly idly in the basement, just waiting to act up and fall apart, creating a headache for the homeowner to deal with. However, there are water heaters that can work out to be the complete opposite of this mental image.

Tankless water heaters have been gaining popularity in recent years. Unlike a traditional tank water heater, which maintains a reservoir of water at a certain temperature constantly throughout the day, a tankless water heater heats the water on demand through heating coils. This means you don’t have to have a giant tank taking up space in your basement, but if your home is large, you may need multiple tankless heaters. Since they’re smaller, tankless heaters can be installed closer to the plumbing fixtures they service. This means less piping to install, but it may take up valuable cabinet space.
