Keeping your home and property safe is probably not on the top of your mind when you’re firing up the grill in your backyard. It’s true that in most cases, your grill may not cause a catastrophic safety incident, but there are still a few things that are good to keep in mind when using your grill that will help you to keep yourself, your family, and your property safe.

For one, regardless of whether you’re using a gas or charcoal grill, there’s the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. Be sure to have plenty of ventilation available. Additionally, it’s good to have at least three feet of space between your grill and any building, since radiant heat and smoke can damage them pretty easily, even if they’re not setting the building on fire. Finally, if you’re using a gas grill, be sure to regularly inspect all the hoses, connections, and other working parts for damage.
